Two listening sessions, one in July and one in August, both organized by de Appel’s Curatorial Programme participant, Sharmyn Cruz Rivera, invite us to consider sound as a conduit of vibration, sentiment, energy, and a testament to the life force that travels through the body. Recognizing sound as a primordial player in our emotional inner life, Ambient music and its commercialized form, New Age music, saw beyond the boundaries of sound-making to imagine new ways of relating to it. Throughout history, music has played an important role in the search for spiritual wisdom and self-actualization. The musical lexicon created in the 60s and 70s with the incorporation of soundscapes and emerging technologies continues to inform and expand through contemporary music-making. This two- part program takes note of such histories and seeks to mark their everlasting influence in sound experimentation today.
